Throughout the whole month of October (2018), I was feeling low, unhappy & confused about my life but I didn’t want to face my reality as I had no plan or sense of direction of who I wanted to become. I just had this mindset of “oh well it is what it is” until when reality kicked in & I suddenly realised I was stuck in a loop. I was doing the same things but in a different way each time by making temporary changes (inconsistently), make short term money, become complacent, then make the same mistakes again but still expect a great outcome. However, history repeated itself and I always found myself in a much worse situation lol...

(N.B. first thing I recommend doing is, taking time to stop, think & reflect on how you’ve been living your life in the last few years? How do you portray yourself to the world? How does it make you feel inside? How do you deal with your tribulations? and then ask yourself, Am I truly happy?)

After looking deep into my life, I accepted I’m not happy and I need to find myself & my purpose in life. So, I started looking for a sign on how to start these changes via inspiring pages/people I followed on social media. At exactly 1:51am on the 31st Of October, I seen a post on @RebeccaTembo_ instagram story about how she just finished going 21 days without listening to music or watching TV etc. I was curious. So I asked her why she did so? she replied saying “just to be in a more focused frame of mind. I had substitute it with podcasts, interviews, productive vlogs etc. Faith and mindset comes from what you hear” This inspired me to want to do something similar but more suitable to me (without fully sacrificing my music loll).

That’s when I came up with an idea to start a personal “30 Day Of Self” challenge. To simply just watch 1 random motivational video on YouTube a day first thing in the morning (to be honest, I did it in the afternoon/evening once a while.. heyy it’s not easy loll) for 30 days & picked 2/3 lines I liked the most from it then document it. I used my Instagram story to document each video I watched to help keep me accountable. I would post the video I watched with the day I’m on i.e “Day 1” then I added 2 main lines I liked from the video & posted it onto my story then saved to my Instagram highlights (check @davidologunja on Instagram for a visual representation).

After just 30 days of watching 1 video a day, I experienced a huge change in my mindset (in-fact after just 2 days, I began to feel a difference). I became a lot more self aware, mentally & spiritually stronger, learnt to face my fears, started doing a lot of things differently, strengthened my relationship with my family/friends, made new friendships with motivational, inspirational & spiritual type of people, started reading books, changed the way I spent my time, was cautious of the 5 people I spent my time most of my time with & questioned things I didn’t understand. I also became a lot more knowledgeable, learnt the importance of discipline, started to change my bad habits, felt the feeling of being free by just being myself etc. I now walk with faith & belief in anything I do but most importantly I found my purpose in life!

However, this 30 day of self challenge I did, was not just about watching a video a day. It was about actively studying each video (sometimes I re-watch the same video 2/3 times during the day), taking notes from it, and implementing what was necessary to my life.

P.s this is just one recommended way of starting your self-development (there’s 100 other ways but this worked for me) but don’t expect your life to change overnight. I’ve learnt self-development is a lifetime process that requires commitment & consistency. I’m even currently going through my toughest times but I’m now fully aware of myself & my purpose, made notes, got a plan, goals set & a clear idea of who I want to become and how I’m going to achieve it. I do have times were I feel to give up (I.e. even doing this blog was scary but here we are lol) but then I remember why I started, where I’m coming from, and where I’m going. I’ve got a long way to go but I’m now the captain of my ship (life) & I sail in full faith no matter the storm I may come across (obstacles).

I will be going into much more specific details in my upcoming weekly posts reflecting on what I’ve learnt from doing “30 Days Of Self” and how I’m currently implementing them.
